Bayfield, Wisconsin: A Winter Retreat

Wisconsin sits right in the between the midwest and the northwestern mountain states. Snowfall is abundant in the winter and humidity is frequent in the summer. Year round, it’s actually a great place to visit. In the winter, though, it turns into a wonderland retreat, especially for those unwilling to trek out to the Colorado mountains for some much-deserved skiing. Bayfield, Wisconsin really has it all. If you enjoy snow activities, the winter months in Bayfield offer a wealth of things to do.

Snowmobile Trails

There are quite a few snowmobile trails throughout Bayfield and the surrounding counties. The best snow cover is about 3 inches. These trails are groomed and maintained for perfect snowmobiling conditions.

Bayfield Sled Dog Trails

You don’t have to be a professional musher. Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing in Bayfield teaches you how to mush and drive your own team of sled dogs. Or, you can choose to ride along with a guide. It’s a rewarding winter experience, especially if you don’t stray too far from skiing often. Not many people can say they’ve mushed a team of sled dogs. Dog sledding trips are available for anyone of all ages and abilities.

Ice Caves

When Lake Superior freezes over, explore the ice caves at Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. These mainland sea caves (better known as ice caves) are beautiful to witness. While these caves require a 2 mile round trip on Lake Superior’s ice cover, you’ll be happy you made the trip to see the sparkling caves.

Snowshoeing Trails

Bayfield’s powdery snow cover allows for a perfect snowshoeing adventure. Bayfield Brownstone Trail is a common snowshoeing trail for locals and visitors. The trail runs right along Lake Superior, so you can simply imagine the views you’ll see if you take the trail route closer to the lake.

Cross Country Ski Trails

Don’t rule skiing out in Bayfield. It’s easily the most popular Amerian winter sport, and Bayfield Country prides itself as a skiing wonderland. Check out the cross country ski trails in the area that stretch far and wide throughout the state.
