Craft Breweries in Grand Rapids That You Should Know About

The claim to “Beer City USA” belongs to several cities, but a deserving city is certainly Grand Rapids, MI. With over 30 breweries in the area, all of which create excellent variations and takes on traditional beers, Grand Rapids is a leading force in the craft beer movement. Thanks to the help of May Group Realtors, who know the Grand Rapids area better than just about anyone, we were able to assemble a list of top breweries in Grand Rapids that you should either visit, or just sample.

Founders

Constantly making the list of one of the top breweries in the United States is Founders. Their All Day IPA is stretching across the country and has won them many awards. They try hard to make beers that are distinct and unique. You may not like all their beers, but you know that you are trying something different every time you order a beer from Founders. Other popular beers that they make include their Breakfast Stout, Centennial IPA, Dirty Bastard, Double Trouble, Dissenter, Big Lushious, and Mosaic Promise.

A lesser known brewery that deserves more recognition is Brewery Vivant and is located in Grand Rapids. They take many traditional Belgian style beers and beers from farmhouse breweries in Belgium and Northern France and add a combination of old world and new world ingredients and methods to make great beers. Some of their popular beers include Big Red Coq, Farm Hand, Triomphe, Undertaker, Zaison, Solitude,Trebuchet, and Escoffier.

Harmony Brewing Company

Located in the Eastown neighborhood of Grand Rapids, Harmony Brewing company brews small batches of great beer that go fast and typically stay local. If you make it into their location, you have to try one of their great pizzas with a beer. Some of their popular beers include Flower Power, Deep End Imperial Stout, Capricorn, Crossroads Rye PA, Fiddlestix IPA, Golden Lion Tamarin, and Star Stuff.

Perrin Brewing Company

Located about 10 miles north of the downtown Grand Rapids area, Perrin Brewing Company is a fantastic microbrewery that makes a variety of unique and great brews. Some popular beers they make include their American IPA, Grapefruit IPA, Kona Brown Ale, Black, I.IPA, Razzberry Blond, Stoutwood, Hopwood, Quadwood, and Manifesto.

Hot Spots to grab a brew

If you’re not really in the mood for traveling around to each individual brewery in the area, there are some great places to sit down and sample many of the options from the area.

Located in downtown Grand Rapids, Hopcat has been pouring excellent beers for the past few years, and has over 100 taps that are constantly rotating. Even the most beer adverse people can find something that they like here, and it is a paradise for beer lovers. Luckily for you, there are other Hopcats around the state of Michigan, and likely in Indiana soon, including locations in Detroit and Lansing.

Graydon’s Crossing

This British Pub themed restaurant and bar that always is stocked with great Michigan beer and has rotating chef specials for food. A great place to get together and get great food along with great beer.

Meanwhile Bar

A great hangout spot after work or on the weekend. They have happy hour specials of all Michigan products, and the beers from local breweries in Grand Rapids and all around Michigan.

Logan’s Alley

Located East of the downtown area on Michigan Street, Logan’s Alley is a great go to bar food a wide selection of Michigan and international beer. Along with having a great selection of Michigan beers, you can join their Worlds Beer Club and try a great selection of beers from around the world.
