How to Make Friends When Traveling Alone

You might be thinking to yourself “why would someone want to travel alone?” after reading the headline to this article. Surprisingly, a lot of people travel alone all of the time, some preferring to travel alone. Traveling alone doesn’t mean that you will be alone the entire time of your trip. There are plenty of ways to make friends through your travels. Find out how below!

Where to Stay

Couchsurfing is a service that matches up travelers with someone who is willing to let travelers sleep at their house and also the other way around. You are able to meet up with people in the area and pick a person to stay with that you think you’ll get along with.

Hostel dorms is another great place to stay if you are looking to meet friends. Just treat it like your freshman year of college and leave the doors to your dorm open and be social!

Where to Meet People

In a foreign place, it can be hard to know where the people you want to meet are. Try out one of these apps to meet people in your area: Party with a Local, Travel Buddies, Backpackr, Tourlina, and Meetup.

Another great way to meet people is to join group tours or organized events. There is bound to be at least one person there that you can talk to and ask to hang out with.

Most travel destinations with hostels have hostel bars nearby. They are the social scene of your travel destination. When you’re at the bar, dance with other people to start creating connections.

If you are on some form of public transportation for a long time, this is another perfect place to meet people and start conversations with them.

Another way to meet people is to look for solo travelers and befriend them. There are more people traveling alone then you would think.

Conversation Starters

You already have one thing in common with people you will meet and that is traveling! As a conversation starter, you can talk about traveling since that is one thing that you have in common.

Bring cards along with you. You can’t play cards by yourself necessarily, which makes it easy to ask people to join.

Another conversation starter tip is to just say something to another person. You can’t allow the fear of what their response will be to hold you back.
