Five Health Benefits of Going to the Spa

There’s nothing quite like going to the spa, unwinding, and relaxing in the tranquility and peacefulness of all it has to offer. Spas provide a varity of services that are all meant to take its guests to a new place–somewhere that creates a sense of relaxation through meditation, massage, relaxing saunas, and more. According to Health and Fitness Travel, there are several health benefits to taking a spa holiday.

While many people go to the spa or resorts or inns with spas for the relaxation efforts it brings, spas also prevent a lot of issues with the body and mind, and even increase certain health benefits. So if you’re asking yourself whether or not you should take a much-needed trip to the spa, the answer is yes.

1. It Reduces Stress Hormone Levels
Probably the most obvious result of taking a trip to the spa–even a step inside a spa lowers stress. You’ll take in the fresh aroma of the environment with relax-enhancing fragrances and soft music. Studies have proven that massages reduce the levels of stress (known as cortisol), which slows your heart rate and lowers blood pressure. Not only do these relaxing benefits occur, muscle aches and pains can also be reduced with a massage.

2. It Boosts Immunity
According to the American Psychological Association, stress weakens the immune system, therefore, the reduction of stress allows your body room for “natural killer cells,” or white blood cells. Massages and other relaxing techniques boost immune systems this way, especially in those with severely decreased or affected immunity.

3. It Reduces Pain
For many, a trip to the spa creates not only a sense of relaxation, but also can take the mind off of pain. Many people experience muscular pain, chronic headaches, and pains from labor. Any kind of treatment at a spa, from a stone massage to soaking of the relaxing steam of a sauna, will relax your muscles and take your mind off of work stress. Massages and hot tubs will also reduce chronic back pain, or at least help ease the pain.

4. You Will Sleep Better
If one thing’s for sure, a trip to the spa will send you on your way feeling like you’re floating on a cloud. Spas aid in the promotion of sleep–you’re body will feel much more relaxed with all that stress it’s accumlated now vanished.

5. It Improves Your Mood
Lastly, the spa does you one more favor: it helps you feel good. There’s no doubt you’ll walk away feeling a new person, fresh, and relaxed. Treatments will sooth your body and even a massage will increase the levels of your brain to produce those feel-good hormones (dopamine and serotonin).
