Historic Sites Worth Visiting in Edenton, NC

Edenton, North Carolina holds a great amount of history in the U.S.┬áThe town is known to be “The South’s Prettiest Small Town.” Visitors and locals often love learning about the history of Edenton–it’s one of the many great reasons to visit. From historic, preserved homes to restored museums, Edenton is rich with plenty of history to gain a new perspective of America’s pre-Revolutionary period.

1767 Chowan County Courthouse
This is the most preserved colonial courthouse in America. One of the signers of the Declaration of Indepence, Joseph Hewes, was the one appointed to raise funds for its construction. Several revolutionary judges and patriots heard cases here. Visitors can take a guide tour through the courthouse to get a better perspective of this intact courthouse.

1886 Roanoke River Lighthouse
The historic lighthouse overlooks Edenton Bay. It was in commission from 1887 to 1941. It was originally located on screw-pilings in teh Albermarle Sound–which marked as the entrance to the Roanoke River. The lighthouse is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with low-cost entry admission.

It’s said that the lighthouse is the last example in the United States of a squarer frame building constructed for a screw-pile base.

Civil War Trail Sites
Explore the Civil War sites of North Carolina. Learn along the trails of the Civil War from the Edenton Bell Battery to Harriet Jacobs’ escape from slavery through the Maritime Underground Railroad.

Cupola House
The Cupola House was built in 1758 for Frances Corbin, who was an agent for one of the eight Lords Proprietors, Lord Granville. The house encompasses a bed of gardens which have been restored from 1769. The home is a National Historic Landmark. The gardens are open daily to the public, as well as the house for a gudied walking tour.

Edenton Cotton Mill Historic District
The Edenton Cotton Mill Historic District consists of 57 mill houses (ranging from 1899-1923), a brick office building, an industrial building, and the First Christian Church built in 1916. The renovation of the mill consisted of a lot of changes but brought back a sense of history for Edenton.
