The Best Lighthouses in Cape Cod, MA

Even though most Cape Cod lighthouses are only open in the warmer months for tours, just seeing a Cape Cod lighthouse is a travel must. Cape Cod is known for its nautical activities and beautiful Atlantic beaches. Lighthouses are an important part of Cape Cod history. If you love lighthouses, here are some of the best right in Cape Cod.

Nauset Light

This lighthouse almost fell off of a 60-foot cliff. The preservation society saved the lighthouse in 1996 and is now in a new location across the street. It was originally built in 1838 and was the lighthouse station for Eastham. The lighthouse is continually well preserved by the Nauset Light Preservation Society. In the winter, the beach profile lowers and you can see old brick from one of the original Three Sisters lighthouses.

Chatham Light

Chatham is an active coastguard station, which means you can only tour during open house dates. The lighthouse was established in 1808 and the current building was built in 1877. It’s located on a bluff on Main Street in Cape Cod, which offers an amazing view of the coast. This lighthouse is also the site of the 1952 Pendelton Rescue.

Highland Light

Highland Light is known as Cape Cod’s first lighthouse and is the tallest on Cape Cod. It was originally built in 1797 and the current structure was built in 1857. On clear days, you can see 20 miles of Cape Cod coast from the top of the lighthouse. This lighthouse is active and the U.S. Coast Guard operates the light itself.

Race Point Light

Race Point Lighthouse was originally a rubblestone structure built in 1816. At Race Point, you can stay at the historical keeper’s house or Whistle House. The drive to Race Point Beach winds through beautiful forests before getting to the white sand beach.

Nobska Light

Although it’s not currently open to the public, in 2016 The Friends of Nobska Light were given permission to care for the lighthouse after the U.S. Coast Guard planned to deaccession it. The Friends of Nobska Light plan to rehabilitate the grounds and lightkeeper’s house by 2018. Nobska is on the very southwestern tip of Cape Cod and was originally established in 1828. You can watch Martha’s Vineyard ferries come and go at the beautiful beach area.

Lighthouses are a key part of Cape Cod history and a lighthouse tour is a Cape Cod tourist favorite. If you’re looking for a place to stay in Cape Cod, Candleberry Inn on Cape Cod is perfectly located in the geographical center of Cape Cod, making it close to everything the romantic, salt-air peninsula has to offer.
