By the Side of the Road Inn and Cottages

This Historic Shenandoah Valley inn was built in the 1790s and continues to represent the very best of the classic southern style and charm. The antebellum mansion features a lovely porch where you can enjoy your morning coffee, complete with the customary pillars that make antebellum architecture so recognizable and picturesque. Just a few minutes outside of beautiful Harrisburg, VA and the Shenandoah National Park, the inn offers four suites inside the manor house and five cottages and cabins that are sure to appeal to any guest. Each accommodation features a different taste of classic, southern design ranging from the picture of elegance and southern class to wonderfully subtle and homey.

Cuthbert House Inn

The Cuthbert House Inn in Beaufort, South Carolina is one of the most historic and beautiful bed and breakfasts in the south. The town is rife with southern charm, and the bed and breakfast is placed right near downtown. It also resides nearby local beaches and golf courses, providing guests with fun things to do and great places to see. The inn’s antebellum architectural design and classic décor bring every guest back to when the mansion was built over 200 years ago. If you’d rather enjoy the old world in the lobby but need a break while you sleep, they offer rooms designed to be warm and modern in addition to their classic pre-war style rooms.

Linden Antebellum Bed & Breakfast

This gorgeous B&B is so dedicated to its southern style and charm that “antebellum” is right in their name. Located in the heart of Mississippi in the lovely town of Natchez, guests are sure to love everything about this southern belle. Just minutes outside of downtown, the B&B rests on seven acres of beautiful country land. The staff emphasizes southern hospitality, inviting guests to join them for dinner in their formal dining room and encouraging them to explore the grounds and house to take in the pre-war design. You can also enjoy the view from the large, antebellum porch or nestle in front of the cozy fireplaces.

Oak Valley Plantation: Restaurant and Inn

Slightly different than the other entries on this list, Oak Valley Plantation is an actual working plantation that offers accommodations for guests hoping to enjoy their visit a little longer. The plantation rests on 25 acres of land, some of which was utilized to build cottages in both the 19th century and modern styles. Though the plantation doesn’t offer accommodations within the mansion itself, guests are welcome and even encouraged to tour the building, which retains its original furnishings and design, and surrounding land for a full taste of what life on sugar plantations was like 200 years ago. Guests are also welcome to enjoy the on-site restaurant, which features the southern-style cuisine that makes Louisiana famous, including gumbo and Po-boys.

Nottoway Plantation and Resort

The most luxurious and extravagant option on this list, Nottoway Plantation and Resort is a beautiful ode to the style and class of the pre-war southern United States. Located near beautiful White Castle, Louisiana, this plantation is a part of the Historic Hotels of America and an AAA Four-Diamond Award winner. The magnificent estate was built in the 1850s on an expansive sugarcane plantation and was recently restored to its full glory. The largest existing antebellum mansion in the South, Nottoway’s mansion offers daily tours, views of the Mississippi River and oak-draped lawns from its balconies and 3-story Rotunda, deluxe bedrooms in the classic style, multiple ballrooms, luxury dining, and more amenities than any one guest could ask for.
