Train travel has become somewhat antiquated, but there are some amazing, scenic train trips to be had in the United States. What better way to see some of the best U.S. wonders than from the window of a fast moving train, just as they did years ago. Here are the top five train travel trips to take.

Hudson Valley, New York

The Hudson Valley trains take guests up the beautifully scenic Hudson Valley, winding up and up. These train trips are a great weekend or day trip idea for everyone to enjoy. During the trip, guests can see parts of the river that are only accessible by train. There are also a number of great stops to enjoy such as Hyde Park, home to the Culinary Institute of America.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

The Grand Canyon is one of America’s most famous tourist attractions. There are so many ways to see the Grand Canyon, but now guests can visit by train. Take a trip back in time an see a shoot-out in Williams, Arizona. Afterwards, ride a couple of hours to the rim of the Grand Canyon, where you can have a few hours to explore before riding back.

The Sierra Railroad, California

Known as one of the most recognizable railroads in the country, maybe even the world, The Sierra Railroad has been featured in hundreds of movies, including Back to the Future III, Bad Girls, Unforgiven, and Blood Red. Located in California, the 1800’s style rains are known for their themed train rides. It is available only a short drive from a number of big California cities including San Francisco and Sacramento.

Colorado Rockies 

The Colorado Rockies train is for adventurous travelers, with rails zipping through snow-capped mountains, past gorges and through valleys. The trains have been running since the 1800’s, with tours that last six to eight hours usually. There are four trains available that celebrate the spirit of the Old West. There is the Scale Pike’s Peak on the world’s highest cog railway. Also, available is the 1881 steam train for a journey through the San Juan Mountains.

Great Smoky Mountains


Known as one of the most scenic locations in America, especially during the fall months with the beautiful changing colors, are the Great Smoky Mountains. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad offers a variety of rides throughout the mountains from mystery dinner rides to short lunch rides along the Nantahala Gorge. During the winter months, guests can enjoy the Polar Express train.
