Where to Learn Hula Dancing in Oahu, HA

Tropical beaches, beautiful weather and hula dancing are just a few things that come to mind when someone mentions Oahu, Hawaii. When traveling to Oahu, a must-do activity is learning to hula dance. Kūhiō Beach Torch Lighting & Hula Show

Attend the Kūhiō Beach Torch Lighting & Hula Show on Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday, from 6:00-7:30 p.m. during the warmer months, and 6:00-7:00 p.m. during the winter. See a torch lighting, performers and dance troupes, called hālau hula. The show is free, and visitors can bring seating or sit on the grass. Who knows? You might be inspired to stand up and dance along with the performers.

Alii Luau, Polynesian Cultural Center

Attend the luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Dancing, drumming, fire and leis round out this energetic show. Combine it with a feast, featuring teriyaki meat, fruit, salad and desserts. Dress comfortably, and get ready to dance. Buy your tickets in advance as they sell out fast.

Royal Hawaiian Center

Hula lessons are offered almost every day at the Royal Hawaiian Center, in addition to ukulele workshops, lei-making and quilting sessions. In the hour-long classes, Puake’ala Mann, who trained under dance master Hälau Hula o Maiki, teaches class-goers simple movements, footwork and gestures. By the end of the hour, they can put what they have learned together into a dance.

Hawaii Hula Company Lessons

Take private or small group lessons from the dancers with the Hawaii Hula Company. They come to you, bring the music and leis, teach you about hula history and teach you some moves. Once you learn the hand motions and steps, dance along to a song.

Prince Lot Hula Festival

The annual Prince Lot Hula Festival is the largest non-competitive hula festival in Hawaii. It offers performances by more than 20 groups, a craft fair, entertainment, admission to the palace and refreshments. Follow along with the dancers and pick up some hula skills.
